Eleanor

It was a perfect day for softball, but no one was paying attention to the weather.
The California Gold needed one run to tie the game against the Cougars. One run to tie and one to win would send them to the Championships. Time was slipping away from the Gold. It was the bottom of the 7th inning with two outs.
Eleanor Walters heard the sharp crack as her bat found the ball. It sailed over the shortstop’s head, dropping against the fence. Eleanor ran. Her legs were pumping, driving her past first base. She stretched to reach second.
The second baseman caught the ball, but the outfielder’s throw was too late. Eleanor was already standing on the base.
“Safe!”
